Gordon’s functional health patterns is a comprehensive framework for assessing an individual’s health status. It consists of 11 patterns, each of which represents a different aspect of a person’s functional health. These patterns include health perception-health management, nutritional-metabolic, elimination, activity-exercise, sleep-rest, cognitive-perceptual, self-perception-self-concept, role-relationship, sexuality-reproductive, coping-stress tolerance, and value-belief.
When assessing the growth and developmental patterns of two toddlers of different ages, the following components of Gordon’s functional health patterns can be applied:
Health perception-health management: This pattern focuses on the toddler’s perception of their health and how they manage it. For example, a two-year-old toddler may not have a clear understanding of their health, while a four-year-old may be able to identify symptoms of illness and communicate their health needs to their caregivers.
Nutritional-metabolic: This pattern focuses on the toddler’s nutrition and metabolism. For example, a one-year-old may still be breastfeeding or drinking formula, while a three-year-old may be able to eat a wider variety of foods and have a better understanding of healthy eating habits.
Cognitive-perceptual: This pattern focuses on the toddler’s cognitive and perceptual abilities. For example, a two-year-old may be learning to recognize colors and shapes, while a four-year-old may be able to count and recognize letters.
To compare and contrast the growth and developmental patterns of two toddlers of different ages, we can apply these components of Gordon’s functional health patterns to assess each toddler’s health status in each pattern. By doing so, we can identify similarities and differences in their growth and development.
